We introduce some of our study sites and we provide details on the different emissions sources.
The Matimba and Medupi power stations are two large emission sources located in South Africa. Those emit both nitrogen oxides (NOx) and carbon dioxide (CO2) that can be monitored from space.
The Tsumeb copper smelter in Namibia is a source of sulfur dioxide (SO2) through processing of the ores. A sulfur-capture plant has been implemented in Tsumeb in 2015 to reduce the SO2 emissions. This reduction has been verified through satellite observations.
The Highveld region in South Africa includes multiple large emitters of nitrogen dioxide and greenhouse gases, such as coal-fired power plants and the Secunda syntetic fuel plant. Emissions from there sources can be monitored using satellite data.
